The Day!

The Day!

I can still vividly remember the day I got my first BMX. It was a Friday. I got back from school and dad had a big smile on his face. A menacingly unreadable adult one. My first thought was Oh no, he’s found my naughty magazine–but how?! It was too well hidden!

Except dad hadn’t found my naughty magazine, I was sure of it from the way he said “I may just have something for you–call it an early birthday present”. No, this was something good–something almost as good as my wildest dreams (my wildest dreams involved meeting up with my all-time BMX heroes, and as good as dad was at sorting stuff out, I very much doubted that he’d managed to get them to come round to my house).

Dad told me to follow him. I resisted at first, but soon gave in. We went around the back of the house, and that was when it hit me like a ton of bricks: a brand-new BMX bike leaning against the wall. Not just any BMX bike, in fact, no. This was the BMX bike I had wanted for ages–It was a classic, chrome, beast of a bike! It was the bike of all bikes, the Haro Group 1 CR I had always wanted!

OK, so it turned out that that bike wasn’t intended for use on the streets of my hardcore village. It broke within weeks of abuse. But that didn’t matter, I continued to ride it anyway, even though it had a crack in the frame. The fact it had become a death-trap didn’t matter to me one bit. It was my death-trap, that was all that mattered!
